If you live with MS, reflexology could improve sensory symptoms, urinary symptoms and muscular stiffness.
Although health researchers have only begun studying reflexology scientifically in the last few years, it’s widely practised throughout the world.
There have now been a number of research studies investigating whether reflexology can help with MS symptoms.
“In one study, 71 patients were randomised to either reflexology treatment with manual pressure on specific points of the feet and massage of the calf area, or to non-specific massage of the calf area only. 53 patients completed the study and there were significant improvements in the mean scores of paraesthesia (abnormal sensations such as pins and needles), bladder symptoms, muscle strength and spasticity.
In another study, 73 people received either reflexology or basic foot massage weekly for ten weeks, primarily as a treatment for pain. Both groups showed benefits in pain, fatigue, depression and spasms with no clear difference between reflexology and massage. The effect on pain lasted for up to 12 weeks.
More recently, three separate studies compared the effects of reflexology and relaxation on fatigue, pain and psychological symptoms (anxiety, stress and depression) in women with MS. In each of these studies, reflexology was given to 25 women with MS for four weeks, twice a week for 40 minutes. In all of the studies, reflexology was found to reduce the severity of these symptoms and was considered an effective technique.” Multiple Sclerosis Trust
Reflexology is an ancient form of holistic therapy dating back to Egyptian times, it's based on the principle that all the organs, structures and systems of the body have corresponding reflexes in the feet which have over 7,000 nerve endings.
How Does It Work?
Using specialised techniques, as a reflexologist I can detect imbalances in the body which can cause a variety of symptoms and disorders. By unblocking these reflexes on a regular basis, balance can be restored to the body and symptoms improve.
Reflexology is a deeply relaxing and calming treatment that works on a physical and emotional level, allowing the body to regain its natural balance.
Reflexology has a cumulative effect, meaning the more treatments you have, the greater the effects.
