Why Meditation Matters to Me – And How It Can Help You Too
Starting My Meditation Journey
My journey with meditation began in earnest in 2021, as we were coming out of the pandemic. That’s not to say I hadn’t tried before—I dipped in and out for years, following guided meditations on YouTube or enjoying those blissful ten minutes of stillness at the end of a yoga class.
But back then, meditation was something I turned to only when life felt stressful. As soon as things improved, I stopped again. Life was too busy, or I’d get frustrated with my non-stop mind. Really—how could so many thoughts crowd into such a short space of time?
Why Meditation Finally Stuck
Looking back, I realise I hadn’t truly understood what meditation could offer. I thought it was simply about “switching off” or listening to a recording. I never found a teacher or class that felt right—many felt too religious or too tied into yoga, and I couldn’t see where I fit.
Everything changed in 2021, when I became very unwell with pain and, in hindsight, extreme burnout. As part of my recovery, I was gently introduced to short, simple meditations. My teacher explained how important it was to help my body feel safe—because it’s hard to heal when you’re constantly running on adrenaline.
That’s when I learnt an important truth: I can no more switch off my thoughts than I can stop breathing. But what I can do is notice them, without always reacting.
The Benefits I’ve Experienced
Some meditations feel calming, others feel messy—but the biggest lesson has been that consistency and kindness matter more than perfection. Over time, meditation has:
Made me less reactive to physical pain
Helped me feel calmer and more grounded
Softened my anger and frustration in stressful situations
Today, meditation anchors me firmly in my life. I don’t meditate for hours, and I’m not aiming for enlightenment. I still see myself as a beginner, but it’s a practice I wouldn’t be without.
Why I Want to Share Meditation With Others
Sometimes I wonder if I’m ready to teach, but I feel strongly about sharing how meditation has helped me—and how it can help other women, too. Meditation isn’t about doing it “right”; it’s about showing up for yourself, even imperfectly.
If you’re curious about how meditation might support you, I’d love to welcome you to my next course.
